TOP 10 MUST-WATCH SERIES - PART 1
From supernatural dramas to gritty crime thrillers, the world of television has no shortage of compelling series to binge-watch. In this article, we'll take a look at some of the most popular series that have captured audiences' attention in recent years.
1. Lucifer:
Lucifer is a unique blend of supernatural drama and crime thriller that centers around the devil himself. After becoming bored with life in Hell, Lucifer Morningstar (played by Tom Ellis) decides to leave his throne behind and move to Los Angeles. There, he teams up with LAPD detective Chloe Decker (played by Lauren German) to solve crimes and battle against demons.
First time I was introduced to this series, I honestly thought I'd be seeing some satanic rituals happening type of horrors. I didn't even do any research about it and wasn't even remotely interested in watching it. My cousin hounded me about it for days at first until he just decided to put it on and said watch. I never stopped watching since, I even finished it before him.
It is by far one of my favorite series ever. I didn't even want it to end but we know all good things come to an end eventually. Having to see the devil walk among humans and living like them is such a thrill.
Growing up having to listen to how bad the devil is and what he does to humans, I think was one of the reasons why I didn't want to watch it. However when I saw him being portrayed differently from what humans have said about him all these years made me question a lot of things about the things we've been fed growing up.
Humans putting blame on an entity that might or might not exist to avoid taking responsibility for the terrible things we do on a daily basis.
This show is one of the most interesting things to ever land on TV. Even though some people thought it would change other people's views on the devil. I think it changes how you view humanity itself. Taking accountability being one of the things we tend not to do.
It shows you how easy it is for people to believe something else is to blame for their own mistakes. Done by the choices they made.
I always recommend people to watch Lucifer because the story itself is amazing. I always thought of it as a reflection of what we think good and bad is. The cast knows how to play and embody their characters well enough to carry the story.
A world were the devil doesn't tempt people like we've been but simply asks them what they truly desire in life. The hidden things we have deep inside our hearts we never say out loud because of fear of judgment.
As much as the devil is charismatic and charming, he was also vulnerable and weak. Being put in hell to torture souls for eternity and having people despise him for something he was ordered to do.
This show is something I never thought anyone could show us. It's truly a magnificent story and a definite must watch in my books.
2. Peaky Blinders:
Peaky Blinders, the critically acclaimed British television series, is a gripping crime drama set in the aftermath of World War I. With its excellent writing and compelling characters, it's easy to see why it has become such a popular show.
At the heart of the series is the character of Tommy Shelby, played brilliantly by Cillian Murphy. As the leader of the Shelby family, Tommy is a complex and multifaceted character who is both ruthless and vulnerable, charming and dangerous. His journey throughout the series is one of the most fascinating aspects of the show, as we see him navigate the treacherous world of organized crime while struggling with his own demons.
But Tommy is just one of the many well-written characters in Peaky Blinders. From his brothers Arthur and John, to his cousin Michael, to his formidable adversary, Inspector Campbell, every character in the series is fully realized and brings something unique to the story. Each episode is full of tense moments and unexpected twists that keep the viewer on the edge of their seat.
Even having to write about this masterpiece without spoiling is torture in itself, because the progression and the character developments are just so God damn good. Like I always say to people, just watch it, even you won't be able to bring yourself to spoil it for anyone because you'd want somebody else to feel what you felt when you watched it.
What sets Peaky Blinders apart, however, is its tone. The show has a dark and gritty feel that perfectly captures the post-war atmosphere of a country struggling to find its footing. The violence is brutal and the stakes are high, but there is also a sense of romance and adventure that makes the show feel like a modern-day Western.
And to think at first I thought it wouldn't be as good as people claimed it to be. It is nothing short of amazing. I don't even want to have to write more than I need to because I'll end up writing something that doesn't need to be here in the first place.
Overall, Peaky Blinders is a must-watch for anyone who loves a good crime drama. With its masterful writing, outstanding performances, and distinctive tone, it's no wonder that the show has become a cultural phenomenon. So grab some popcorn and settle in for a wild ride - BY ORDER OF THE PEAKY BLINDERS! (this phrase is still stuck in my head)
3. The Blacklist:
"The Blacklist" is a popular American crime thriller television series that has been running since 2013. The show follows Raymond "Red" Reddington, a former government agent turned high-profile criminal who surrenders himself to the FBI, offering to help them track down and apprehend the world's most dangerous criminals, but only if he is allowed to work with rookie FBI profiler, Elizabeth Keen.
The show's central character, Red, played by James Spader, is a mysterious figure with a dark past and numerous secrets. Throughout the series, Red and Liz, played by Megan Boone, work together to solve complex criminal cases, while also unraveling the mystery surrounding Red's true identity and his connections to some of the most dangerous criminal organizations in the world.
Till this day whenever I say the name Raymond Redington I can't help but smile like some idiot fan boy who can't describe how good this series is.
You can't watch this show without uttering that man's name. He is an eccentric. A living and walking legend in his world. God dammit even saying his name in the series might get you in trouble with both him and the authorities.
One of the things that makes "The Blacklist" such a compelling show is its complex characters. The relationship between Red and Liz is a major driving force of the series, and the chemistry between Spader and Boone is electric. As the series progresses, we see both characters grow and evolve, as they confront their pasts and work to uncover the truth about their respective histories.
Another standout feature of the show is its intricate plotlines. Each episode brings a new case for Red and Liz to solve, and the cases are often connected to larger story arcs that span multiple seasons. The show is not afraid to take risks, and viewers are often left on the edge of their seats as they try to piece together the clues and solve the mysteries along with the characters.
I'm sure I don't have to say it but James Spader as Raymond Reddington is one of the best performances you'll get on TV. From his charm, to his ruthlessness. To his vulnerability, to the walls he keeps so tall around him that even the closest people to him can't even get a peak at what's happening on the other side.
It has been approved for the tenth and final season, which will conclude on July 13, 2023. Even I can't wait for the final reveal of the one question everybody from the fictional characters to us the audience has been asking for the longest time now; who is Raymond Reddington?
Overall, "The Blacklist" is a well-written and well-acted series that will keep you hooked from start to finish. It's a perfect blend of crime drama, mystery, and action, with just the right amount of humor and heart to balance out the darker elements of the show. If you're a fan of shows like "Breaking Bad," "Homeland," or "The Wire," then "The Blacklist" is definitely worth checking out. Just be warned, once you start watching, you won't be able to stop!
4. Ozark:
Ozark is a gripping crime drama that follows the life of Marty Byrde (played by Jason Bateman), a financial planner who gets caught up in money laundering for a Mexican drug cartel. To protect himself and his family, Marty moves to the Ozarks and sets up a new operation, all while trying to avoid the watchful eye of the cartel and the FBI.
Another series I was introduced to by another cousin of mine. Like the first I wasn't remotely interested in watching it at all because he wasn't willing to tell me what it was about. And I also wasn't willing to atleast check out the trailer either. He kept on saying just watch it you'll understand. I caved but after months of being constantly pestered about it.
And I'll say I've never watched something so intense from the very first episode. As much as it was intense, it was also intriguing, exciting and almost unreal. I mean hear me out real quick, you'll fear and love someone who's supposed to be a villian before you even get to meet him. Nobody is safe in this story. One minute you see an interesting character and you immediately think they'll be the big bad, only to be met by an even worse bad.
Every character is just written so well, the tone and theme always has you guessing and on edge. The story development and progression is simply amazing. I even started recommending it to people after only watching the first two episodes. Because the way it unfolds into this dark world of crime and bloodshed , mixed with what parents are willing to do to keep their families safe is something not many shows incorporate well.
However this series shows something interesting and different when it comes to TV shows and films about families involved in crime together. It has both loveable and hateable(is that a word?) characters that will grow in you with every episode. Even the way each of them are introduced is just yooh guys, I can't stress how good this series is.
I even delayed watching the last season on purpose because I didn't want it to end. I still wish I could see it for the first time. To feel all those emotions again. The only bad thing I have to say about it is it ended.
If you love yourself some crime mixed in with drama that has twists and turns, a roller-coaster of ranging thoughts and emotions, then this is the show for you.
5. Why Women Hate:
Why Women Hate is a powerful documentary series that explores the roots of gender-based violence and misogyny. Through a mix of interviews with experts, survivors, and perpetrators, the series sheds light on the social, cultural, and psychological factors that contribute to gender-based violence and offers insights into how we can work to prevent it.
This is the best show that depicts the known "exaggerated rage" women are always associated with it. As a growing adult male I got to see in this series some of the things I tend to overlook about women. I'm not saying I grew up underestimating women, I just never paid enough attention to realize the contribution of people of my gender towards their anger.
Sometimes it's easy to dismiss a woman's pain because they hide it so well until they can't take it anymore. The sacrifices they make in order to have peace in a home. The silent cries that are never heard because many tend not to pay attention for women are always thought to overly exaggerate every situation.
This series is so good that it shows the little details you miss as a person in general. It had me thinking back to some of the girls I've seen being beaten up by their boyfriends in the streets however the following day, they're all lovey dovey with one another as if nothing happened.
Also what always unfolds with those types of situations. It either ends up with the guy ending their partners life or the girl doing it out of revenge because of the pent up pain and suffering they had to endure with silent cries.
Even though the story has a light tone and theme to it, it also takes an unexpected dark turn as it unfolds more and more. I honestly enjoyed this story because it wasn't telling me about the issues women face in society, it showed me and made me realize them, and also acknowledge them.
I'll never stop recommending this show to people. It is one of the best dramedy series I've ever been introduced to.
The series is set in three different time periods: the 1960s, the 1980s, and present day. In each era, we are introduced to a woman who seems to have it all - a perfect house, a successful husband, and an idyllic life. But as the story progresses, we see the cracks in their seemingly perfect lives and the secrets they are hiding.
The first story is set in the 1960s and follows Beth Ann (played by Ginnifer Goodwin), a dutiful housewife who is devoted to her husband, Rob (played by Sam Jaeger). However, when Beth Ann discovers Rob is having an affair, she begins to question everything she knows about their marriage. With the help of her sassy friend, Sheila (played by Alicia Coppola), Beth Ann starts to take matters into her own hands.
The second story takes place in the 1980s and centers around Simone (played by Lucy Liu), a wealthy socialite who is trapped in an unhappy marriage with her cheating husband, Karl (played by Jack Davenport). Simone is a fashion designer and a force to be reckoned with, but her husband's infidelity pushes her over the edge.
The third and final story is set in present day and follows Taylor (played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste), a successful lawyer who is in a polyamorous relationship with her husband Eli (played by Reid Scott) and girlfriend Jade (played by Alexandra Daddario).
The show is a clever exploration of marriage, infidelity, and what happens when women are pushed to their limits. It's a show that will keep you on the edge of your seat, with twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. The writing is sharp and witty, and the performances from the cast are outstanding.
Overall, Why Women Kill is a must-watch for fans of dark comedies and dramas. It's a series that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, with a message that resonates long after the final episode ends.
6. The Sandman:
Based on the classic comic book series by Neil Gaiman, The Sandman is a highly anticipated fantasy drama that follows the life of Dream, the Lord of Dreams. After being imprisoned for 70 years, Dream escapes and embarks on a journey to reclaim his kingdom and restore order to the realm of dreams.
Another story were you get to see a supernatural creature interact with humanity, ultimately seeing both the good and bad.
The Sandman follows the story of Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, as he navigates a complex and fantastical world filled with gods, demons, and mortals. The series is known for its intricate storytelling and well-developed characters, and the TV adaptation promises to stay true to these beloved elements.
I read the comic books several times because I couldn't get enough of how well written it is. And also I'm just a big fan of any story that has supernatural creatures in them. Many fans of the comic book series have long wished for it to be adapted into live action.
One of the most exciting aspects of the series is its star-studded cast. Tom Sturridge has been cast as Morpheus, and he is joined by a talented ensemble that includes Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance, and Boyd Holbrook. Each actor brings their own unique energy to their roles, and fans like myself were eagerly anticipating seeing them bring these iconic characters to life.
I already have my favorite character from the show and it ain't the lord of dreams himself, but the nightmare he chases around the realm of mortals.
And I must say every character just absorbed me into the story, I didn't even want to pause for one second. I wanted to see it unfold the way it unfolded in the comic books. The Netflix series just made it even more iconic than it already is.
The Sandman promised to be a visually stunning show and man!!! The team that worked on it did an excellent job at it. I have nothing but praise for those who were at the helm of the creation of the world of Sandman. The creators promised to stay true to the comic book's unique visual style, which is known for its intricate details and dreamlike quality, and they did just that without disappointing us. In fact I'd say they overdid it because I can't even describe the beauty of that world without having to picture it vividly in my mind.
I'm even contemplating rewatching it now that I'm playing it in my head.
But perhaps the most exciting thing about The Sandman is the creative team behind the show. Neil Gaiman himself is serving as an executive producer, ensuring that the show stays true to the spirit of the original comic book series. He made sure the writers and creators of the show do it justice because to me it truly deserved it.
Overall, The Sandman promises to be a must-watch for fans of fantasy, comic books, and great storytelling. With its talented cast, stunning visuals, and masterful storytelling, the series is sure to capture the imaginations of audiences around the world. Whether you're a longtime fan of the comic book series or a newcomer to the world of The Sandman, this is one show you won't want to miss.
7. Good Omens:
Good Omens is a dark comedy that follows the unlikely friendship between an angel named Aziraphale (played by Michael Sheen) and a demon named Crowley (played by David Tennant) as they work to prevent the apocalypse. With a star-studded cast and witty dialogue, the series is a must-watch for fans of both comedy and fantasy.
Another amazing story written by the brilliant Neil Gaiman. This story from the very first episode asks questions many of us have pondered over for the longest time regarding the knowledge about the creation of mankind.
The first of my favorite being; If God didn't want mankind to possess the knowledge of good and bad, why did the Creator choose to put the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden. The paradise were humans were said to have been able to live long.
You see, not only the demon of the story asks themselves these questions, even the angel who is supposed to be God's messenger has his own reservations regarding creation, however he tries to keep it to himself. While the demon puts it out there like it is.
Anyway this a fantastic story and a chance for people to and reflect on what they believe is right or wrong. Good or bad, without having to just accept things based they are because we're told if you question creation then you're disrespecting the Creator.
The series follows an angel named Aziraphale and a demon named Crowley who have grown fond of life on Earth and form an unlikely alliance to stop the impending apocalypse. As they work together to prevent the end of the world, they encounter a cast of eccentric characters, including a witch, a young antichrist, and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
The show has received critical acclaim for its witty writing, strong performances, and visually stunning production design. It features a talented cast, including Michael Sheen as Aziraphale, David Tennant as Crowley, and Jon Hamm as the Archangel Gabriel.
Overall, "Good Omens" is a delightful and entertaining series that will appeal to fans of fantasy, comedy, and adventure. Its clever storytelling and unique perspective on the end of the world make it a standout in the crowded landscape of TV shows.
8. Supernatural:
Supernatural is a beloved television series that ran for 15 seasons, captivating audiences with its mix of horror, action, and humor. The show follows brothers Sam and Dean Winchester as they hunt supernatural creatures and battle ancient evils in their never-ending quest to save humanity from the forces of darkness.
This has got to be the only longest series I watched until the conclusion. I mean I even got my mother to watch it with me and she doesn't like horror that much, however she enjoyed this one.
When my cousin told me about this one, I didn't hesitate much because it had all the mythological creatures I've always wanted to see on screen. The likes of Death, Lucifer and even the almighty God. I couldn't pass the opportunity to see the craziness the writer's of the show were willing to explore, for these particular characters to come to life.
And I won't spoil it for you but I loved every single last one of them, especially Lucifer. He was different from the Lucifer I was from the series "Lucifer" and that's what I loved most about him.
One of the most impressive things about Supernatural is its rich mythology. Over the course of 15 seasons, the show introduced viewers to a vast array of supernatural creatures, from ghosts and demons to vampires and werewolves. But the show's mythology extends beyond just the monsters of the week. Supernatural also explores the complex relationships between its characters, including the fraught relationship between the Winchester brothers and their troubled past.
One of the show's greatest strengths is its well-written characters. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki bring a great deal of depth to their roles as Dean and Sam, respectively, imbuing their characters with a range of emotions and motivations that make them relatable and sympathetic. And the show's supporting cast is equally strong, with standout performances from Misha Collins as the angel Castiel, Mark Sheppard as the demon Crowley, and many others.
But perhaps the most impressive thing about Supernatural is its longevity. Over the course of 15 seasons, the show managed to stay fresh and engaging, thanks in large part to the writers' willingness to take risks and push the boundaries of what was possible on network television. Whether it was exploring alternate universes or diving deep into the mythology of the show's villains, Supernatural always managed to surprise and delight its fans.
I watched supernatural till its very last episode because I wanted to see where the brothers would finally end. I won't give my opinion on it now but I will say I appreciated the amount of boundaries they pushed to get that far and the story is well worth it for anyone into supernatural stuff.
Overall, Supernatural is a must-watch for anyone who loves horror, action, and great characters. With its compelling mythology, well-written characters, and willingness to take risks, it is one of the most beloved and influential television series of the past decade. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to the show, Supernatural is sure to captivate you with its mix of scares, humor, and heart.
9. Gotham:
Gotham is an American television series that premiered on Fox in 2014 and ran for five seasons until 2019. The series is set in the fictional city of Gotham and focuses on the early days of James Gordon, the future police commissioner, and the various villains that would later become Batman's enemies.
One of the unique things about Gotham is that it explores the origins of many iconic Batman characters, including the Penguin, the Riddler, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and the Joker. The show also introduces new characters, such as Fish Mooney, a ruthless gang leader, and Theo Galavan, a wealthy businessman with a hidden agenda.
One of the reasons why I decided to watch Gotham was because I grew up a DC fan, and I've always followed any and every live action movie or series they make about the characters of the DC comics. You know I never thought I'd like James "Jim" Gordon, the way I did in this series.
Ben McKenzie does an excellent job portraying Jim Gordon, a complex character who is trying to do the right thing in a city full of corruption. Sure in the animations and comics he shows his badass side, which is cool and all, however in this series we get to really see him you know, how he's portrayed at a younger age and the challenges he faces every day. It's truly magnificent.
The first season of Gotham primarily follows Jim Gordon, and his partner Harvey Bullock, played by Donal Logue, as they investigate the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne, the wealthy couple who were the parents of young Bruce Wayne, the future Batman. Along the way, they encounter various villains, including the Penguin, played by Robin Lord Taylor, and Fish Mooney, played by Jada Pinkett Smith.
As the series progresses, the focus shifts to other characters, such as the young Bruce Wayne, played by David Mazouz, who is trying to unravel the secrets of his family's past and become the hero he is destined to be. The show also explores the complicated relationship between Jim Gordon and his love interest Barbara Kean, played by Erin Richards, and the rise of various villains, including the Riddler, played by Cory Michael Smith, and the Joker, played by Cameron Monaghan.
Robin Lord Taylor is also outstanding as the Penguin, bringing a mix of charm and menace to the character. This guy had my mother for the first time ever loving a villian, which she never does because she's all for the cliché of heroes always winning over villains.
However penguin also became my favorite character because he was played so well, and you get to see both his vulnerable side and cunning side. I always appreciate the dark side of every character, whether they're good or bad.
Other standout performances include Cory Michael Smith as the Riddler, who undergoes a fascinating character transformation over the course of the series. I will say with this character I didn't even know how to react when I realize who it was because I chose to watch the story as if I didn't know who anyone was already. The riddler also became my personal favorite because of his uniqueness.
Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne's loyal butler. I have one thing to say about this bloke; he is one of the best live action Alfred's I've seen on screen. No other words can explain him without spoiling. I'm still looking for the comic that inspired this Alfred because man is just a badass through and through.
Overall, Gotham is a must-watch for fans of the Batman universe. While it takes some liberties with the source material, the show is well-written, well-acted, and full of exciting plot twists and surprises. Whether you're a longtime fan of the comics or a newcomer to the world of Gotham City, this series has something to offer for everyone.
10. Squid Game:
Squid Game is a Korean survival drama that follows a group of people as they compete in a deadly game for a chance to win a massive cash prize. With its intense action and shocking twists, the series has quickly become one of the most talked-about shows on television.
"Squid Game" is a nine-episode TV series that premiered on Netflix in September 2021. It tells the story of a group of financially struggling people who are invited to participate in a deadly game with a grand prize of billions of won. The game involves various challenges and deadly consequences for those who fail, leading to intense drama and suspense throughout the series.
The first thing I noticed about this show was that it had an anime feel to it. I couldn't describe it to one of my cousins because he doesn't watch anime, but those who have watched anime I'm sure agree with me when I say Squid Game has an anime asthetic to it. When I watched it for the first time, it was as if I was watching a live action series about some anime I've never watched before.
One of the show's strengths is its well-crafted characters, each with their own backstory and motivations for participating in the game. The show also explores various themes, such as wealth inequality, desperation, and the human desire for survival. The pacing of the show is well done, with each episode ending on a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more.
Squid Game is one of the most nerve wrecking shows you'll watch. If you're a fan of gore, then this right here will have you witnessing bloodshed earlier than you'd expect. And the best thing about this series is you never expect the twist. It's always unexpected, like how some animes are crafted and structured.
The production value of "Squid Game" is also impressive, with stunning visuals and a haunting soundtrack that adds to the eerie atmosphere of the show. The acting performances are solid, with several standout performances from the main cast.
The story itself has some funny moments, however that also depends on what you think is funny. It is a great series to watch, with some of the most interesting characters you'll find. The challenges they go through are just insane to the point you'll ask yourself if you'd survive any of them.
What I love most about it is the motivations for each character. Most have solid motivations why they want to win and others have something which also brings out their true nature. This show basically shows the dark side of of humans. What we would be capable of if we were cornered and had nowhere else to turn to.
Overall, "Squid Game" is a captivating and intense series that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. It's not for the faint of heart, as the show features graphic violence and disturbing imagery, but for those who enjoy suspenseful dramas, it's definitely worth a watch.
In conclusion, these are just a few of the many compelling series that are currently capturing audiences' attention. From supernatural dramas to crime thrillers, there's something for everyone.
